Metrolink officials say trains crashed after their engineer drove through red light
By Los Angeles Times Staff Writers September 14, 2008 (LA TIMES): Federal transportation officials say it's too early to determine what caused the crash that has killed at least 25 people and left 135 more injured, 40 of them critically.

The residents of the Los Angeles area have been deeply impacted by the terrible tragedy that occurred on September 12th. On that date, the engineer of a Metrolink Commuter train carrying approximately 225 passengers failed to recognize warning signals and crashed head-on into an oncoming freight train - killing 25 and injuring at least 135 more - 40 critically.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those injured or killed in this terrible train accident.

Passengers on commuter trains have certain expectations when they travel. They are putting their safety in the hands of the operators and engineers of the railway. Things like the mechanical soundness of the train and attentiveness and professionalism of the train operators are assumed duties of the railroad carrier. Unfortunately, human error and negligence on the part of the operators or engineers may have been the cause of this latest Chatsworth Metrolink Train Accident.

In 2006 alone, train accidents caused 909 fatalities and 8,244 injuries nationwide, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. Railroad employees, passengers in other autos who were struck at railroad crossings, injuries to passengers aboard trains or walking on or near railroad tracks are among those injured in these dangerous train accidents.
