Help for SUV Rollover Accident Victims
Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are convenient modes of transportation. They accommodate a larger number of people than passenger cars and also haul more cargo.
However, SUVs create more danger for both drivers and passengers. SUV rollover accidents often result in serious injury or death.
Deaths in accidents involving passenger vehicles have steadily declined. However, SUV rollover related incidents have climbed from 1992 forward, with only a small decrease in 2007. In 2007 alone, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reported 4,951 occupant deaths in SUV rollover accidents.
SUV manufacturers have become more vigilant in making sure that their vehicles are as safe as possible. In spite of the improvements, these vehicles account for a disproportionately high number of crashes. According to the IIHS, since 1978, SUVs have had a significantly higher percentage of rollover deaths than cars. SUVs are particularly susceptible to rolling over because of their high centers of gravity.
Rollover accidents occur when a vehicle, often while attempting a sharp turn, cannot maintain proper balance. The weight of the vehicle shifts entirely onto two tires, leading the vehicle to tip over onto its side. Single-vehicle rollover accidents that resulted in death characterized almost half of all occupant deaths in SUVs in 2007.
SUVs are more likely to rollover than other vehicles. This is a fact. It is the responsibility of manufacturers to ensure that their products are as safe as they possible. If automobile manufacturers don’t consider safety measures make them a reality, then they are negligent.
