Seattle Pedestrian Killed In Accident Involving Police Car

A pedestrian died after being hit by a Seattle Police Department (SPD) vehicle, several local news outlets reported. The 23-year-old woman was struck by the vehicle while the officer behind the wheel was responding to a “priority one” call at the request of the Seattle Fire Department. 

No other vehicles were involved.

The incident took place when the pedestrian was in a crosswalk near Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street around 8 p.m. on Monday. After the collision, officers provided CPR to the victim. Seattle Fire Department medics then arrived and took her to Harborview Medical Center. She later died as a result of the multiple blunt force injuries she suffered as a result of the accident, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office stated. 

Seattle Officials Investigate The Deadly Accident Involving Pedestrian

The SPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the accident and is asking anyone with any information regarding the crash to contact the authorities at 206-684-8923.

In a statement, the SPD expressed the agency’s “deepest condolences” to the victim’s family, calling the heartbreaking accident “a terrible tragedy for everyone involved.”

No further details regarding the accident were revealed as officials continue to investigate. 

This tragic accident reminds us of how vulnerable Seattle’s pedestrians are. 

With the number of pedestrian accidents on the rise in the city, this heartbreaking incident should serve all Washington drivers as a reminder to be mindful whenever we approach crosswalks, especially at night time. 

Respect posted speed limits and keep an eye out for pedestrians as you approach intersections and crosswalks. 

State law determines that drivers must always stop for pedestrians at intersections, whether it’s an unmarked or marked crosswalk. Additionally, drivers should also stop for cyclists.
