As temperatures continue to drop, icy and slippery roads will become increasingly hazardous to drivers across Washington state. But difficult road conditions aren’t the only issues drivers should be worried about. Limited visibility caused by the weather can also pose its own risks.
As you find yourself having to use your headlights earlier in the day and sometimes through most of the day, it is important to make sure your car is in good working condition. That means checking your vehicle’s headlights and tail lights to make sure they are working. If repairs are necessary, do not delay. Get them fixed immediately to avoid accidents.
In Washington, Headlights & Tail Lights Must Be In Working Condition: It Is The Law
In Washington state, while headlights must be in use from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, they should also be switched on when visibility is limited or poor. Your tail lights must also be in working conditions at all times.
Working tail lights help to prevent rear-end collisions day and night, but especially while driving in the dusk or in the dark. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-end accidents are one of the most common types of accidents reported nationwide, making up nearly 30 percent of all traffic crashes yearly. And while the rear driver is at fault in most rear-end crashes, that isn’t always the case.
Keep Your Car Well-Maintained To Prevent Crashes
It is the driver’s responsibility to follow the laws. Keeping the vehicle in good condition is part of that, even when it comes to headlights and tail lights.
If a driver is negligent and fails to fix their tail lights and an accident occurs, they could be held responsible for their share of the blame for the collision. While all accidents are different and must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, it is important to keep in mind that when you drive with a malfunctioning set of brake lights or headlights you’re putting the safety of others at risk.
Stay safe this winter and help others stay safe by making sure your tail lights and headlights are in proper working condition.
