Semi Truck Carrying Propane Crashes Near Loon Lake

An accident involving a semi truck carrying a propane tank left the residents of Loon Lake on edge Saturday morning. Following the crash, officials told locals to shelter in place in case of an explosion. Thankfully, officials were able to clear the road without exposing anybody to risks.

According to Washington State Patrol officials, the semi truck driver did not stop for two vehicles that were turning on Sunset Bay Road. Due to this failure, the semi swerved, clipping two cars before rolling into a ditch. The propane tank, which officials said was “loaded,” started leaking in the ditch. This prompted authorities to alert nearby residents about the risks, urging them to shelter in place in case of an explosion.

Officials reported that the semi driver suffered minor injuries while occupants of the other vehicles were not hurt.

The road was shut down so that emergency personnel and cleaning crews were able to clear the road.

Propane Is Safe, But Semi Accidents Involving The Fuel Can Lead To Serious Outcomes

While semi accidents involving propane gas are rare, propane-related deaths are still reported every now and then, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Whatever the case, propane is one of the safest fuels available. However, when large vehicles such as semi trucks are involved in accidents while carrying the fuel, risks increase considerably.

In December 2020, a tanker truck carrying 300 propane tanks exploded after a rollover accident in New York City.

At the time, the truck driver was cut off by another driver prior to the collision. Because of the icy road conditions, the truck driver had difficulties controlling the vehicle. The truck eventually crashed into a Jersey barrier before it overturned, causing the explosion.

The NY truck driver suffered minor injuries.

We are thankful for Washington State officials and emergency personnel who worked fast to ensure that the Loon Lake accident did not expose anybody to any fire-related injuries.
