Mazda Adds Thousands Of Cars To Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag issue continues to plague cars sold across the United States, with Mazda being the latest automaker to launch a related recall.

According to news reports, the firm is recalling 117,000 vehicles for a second time over the dangerous exploding airbags.

Impacted cars include the 2007 through 2012 CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs, the 2003 through 2012 Mazda6 sedans, the 2004 and 2005 MPV minivans, the 2006 and 2007 Mazdaspeed6 sedans, and the 2004 RX-8 sports cars.

These vehicles were originally recalled between 2013 and 2017 to receive replacement Takata airbag inflators. At the time, the firm couldn’t get enough replacement parts from other manufacturers. Because all Takata airbags might be compromised, the company is recalling these vehicles once again to replace the potentially defective items.

Explosive Takata Airbags Still A Concern

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pressured automakers to launch recalls following reports that Takata’s airbags use ammonium nitrate to produce explosions during a deployment.

Because the chemical can deteriorate over time and being exposed to heat and humidity, the metal inflators may blow apart, hurling shrapnel into the car’s cabin.

Over the years, this problem injured over 100 car occupants and killed dozens of others, prompting several automakers to recall millions of vehicles nationwide. Unfortunately, companies like Mercedes-Benz have been slow to recall impacted vehicles, leaving their customers worried about their safety.

Mazda car owners who own vehicles impacted by the Takata airbag recall will receive a notification in the mail by December 18. After that, they should schedule a visit to a dealership where the Takata airbags with the ammonium nitrate will be replaced for free.
