A mother accepted her daughter’s diploma on her behalf on Tuesday. The gesture was meant to honor her child’s life after she was deadly injured in a distracted driving accident.

According to WBRC, a tragic accident in another state brought the attention to the dangers of distracted driving.

Texting and driving was the factor behind the deadly accident. The victim was 17 years old. So her mother could not see her child graduate. Instead, she walked across the stage herself to pick the diploma up.

Students used flowers to decorate the chair reserved to the victim.

After the accident changed her life dramatically, the mother is now ready to avoid similar accidents. She shares her daughter’s story in the hopes that others will avoid distractions.

Distracted driving is a serious problem that increases the risk of accidents. Like drunken driving, distractions impact how fast the driver can respond to an emergency. As a result, cars crash.

Drivers may think they are immune by distraction, but they aren’t. Veteran or not, any driver can become distracted.

Using a phone to text, call, plat games, communicate on social media are all against the law. Still, many drivers remain oblivious. When behind the wheel, drivers must remember they have responsibility over their vehicles. Being distracted shows they are not serious about safety.
