A woman from Spokane Valley lost her life in a Thursday evening accident involving an alleged DUI driver, the Washington State Patrol reported.

According to the authorities, the 37-year-old Fairfield driver who was behind the wheel of a Chevy Silverado was traveling southbound on Highway 27 when he attempted to pass a slower vehicle. As he crossed the double-yellow line, he crashed head on against a Ford Taurus in the northbound lane. The impact sent both vehicles to the southbound lane and shoulder.

While the 72-year-old driver of the Ford was sent to the hospital, the 66-year-old Ford passenger suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The Chevy Silverado driver did not suffer any injuries.

Officials said that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Improper Passing, Intoxicated Driving Increase The Risks Of A Deadly Accident

In their report, WSP said the crash was caused by improper passing, reminding us all that attempting to pass a slower vehicle when unsafe is against the law. Furthermore, officials said the driver was allegedly under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.

As drivers, we must remember that intoxicated driving is against the law.

Intoxicated drivers tend to make bad decisions while operating their vehicles, putting the lives of their passengers and others sharing the road in grave danger. In order to avoid the potential risks associated with drunk driving, we must take traffic laws seriously and never drive under the influence.

In Washington, state laws forbid drivers from operating their vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or greater or with a THC concentration of 5 nanograms or more per milliliter of blood.

Those caught driving while under the influence for the first time may have to pay a fine that can range from $350 to $5,000 and serve up to 364 days in jail.

Avoid troubles with the law as well as potentially deadly accidents by never drinking or doing drugs before driving.
