Agency Films Traffic, Finds Drivers Are Very Distracted

Distracted driving is a serious issue that doesn’t seem to bother many drivers across the country. In order to make others understand this reality and see for themselves just how drivers are constantly distracted by something, an agency decided to film just 20 minutes of rush-hour traffic on South Florida’s I-95 in order to identify common distractions among the drivers and learn more about how often drivers were engaged in distracted behavior.

During the 20 minute video, the agency filmed 2,151 cars. At least 185 of them were driven by motorists who were distracted and at least 150 people were actually chatting on the phone. Other distractions included: using phones to talk, texting, eating, and others. If this video proves anything is that at least 8 percent of the drivers out and about that day were completely distracted by activities that had nothing to do with driving.

Drivers Are Still Too Distracted, CDC Study Finds

In 2013, at least 3,100 people were killed in auto accidents caused by distractions. In the same year, at least 424,000 were injured in similar accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving includes activities that may or may not be associated with phone use. Whenever you take your eyes off the road, regulators report, that’s a distraction. If you’re serious about safety and about making sure that your loved ones are also safe, you will not only put your phone down, but you will also make sure that your passengers are not demanding your attention, and that pets or children are properly restrained.

According to a study carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 70 percent of American drivers between the ages of 18 and 64 admitted to using their cell phones to talk while behind the wheel in the last month. Over 30 percent of respondents said they had read or sent text messages or emails also while behind the wheel.

If you want to stay alive and help others to make sure they will make home safe, put your phone down and focus on the road ahead.
