Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, or PPA, is a drug used as a decongestant in many over-the-counter and prescription cough and cold medications

It has also been used in a number of weight loss products. The Food and Drug Administration has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containing PPA.

Additionally, the FDA issued a public health advisory concerning the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, or bleeding into the brain, associated with phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride. A report by scientists at Yale University School of Medicine concluded a direct link between PPA and increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke, particularly in women. Men may also be at risk, though to a lesser degree.
