Drivers of big rigs need to carry chains when going over the mountain passes in Washington starting on Thursday.
The fine for not carrying a chain is $124, but when winter weather advisories start, a driver can face a $500 fine for not using chains as required.
Larger recreational vehicles, trucks and sport utility vehicles also must follow those rules. The Washington State Patrol will also be checking drivers to make sure they have the correct chains. Other vehicles will be required to have traction tires during winter weather advisories.
