Florida state legislators are currently considering two bills that would prohibit drivers from text messaging behind the wheel and increase the penalties for motorists who are involved in a fatal accident while text messaging. The state is currently one of the 11 remaining states that does not prohibit drivers from text messaging while operating a motor vehicle. In addition to proposed legislation that would forbid drivers from texting, lawmakers are considering a bill that would make vehicular homicide, punishable by up to 30 years in jail, the standard charge for causing a fatal accident while texting.
