Two people were injured in a car accident Tuesday afternoon involving a school bus, according to news reports.
The accident occurred in Benton City when a 17-year-old was reportedly driving a minivan on Horne Road when he lost control of his vehicle. It is unclear why he crossed the centerline, but his minivan went into oncoming traffic and crashed into the side of a school bus with four high school students on board, according to news reports.
The teenage driver sustained internal injuries in the crash and was transported to Kadlec Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown, but he was reportedly listed in serious condition. Police do not believe the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
One of the children on the school bus was transported to a hospital for an injury on his head near his eye, according to news reports. The other children on the bus did not sustain injuries, according to news reports.
Washington State Patrol troopers are still investigating the accident. “deputies say indications are that the driver of the van did not see the school bus as he was distracted and looking at students near the roadway,” according to news reports.
