Distracted driving continues to be one of the most deadly and concerning trend taking over our roads. But as more people become aware of the risks, they become less likely to be engaged in the activity.
In cities like Anchorage, Alaska, teens between the ages of 15 and 19 account for 16 percent of drivers involved in car crashes. The fact the same group accounts for 7 percent of the city’s population proves that teens are simply too distracted, making it more likely for them to be involved in crashes than most other age groups. Once a group of students from a local high school learned about these statistics, they decided to take matters into their own hands.
In order to fight distracted driving, the group of students decided to produce a short film that shows how teen drivers can become sidetracked by other activities while behind the wheel. The message is clear: instead of allowing distraction to be the master of you, take control of your destiny.
To the teens who participated in the effort, the idea was to teach teens that distraction is a real issue. And that only attention and focus on the road ahead will help you make home safe.
According to the teenagers, young and inexperienced drivers often ignore the fact that distractions lead to crashes—until they are exposed to the consequences of distracted driving.
The video was sent to the “Raise Your Voice” campaign from the Alaska Injury Prevention Center, and is one of the eight videos produced by groups of teenagers across the state.
The films, which are 100 percent student made, all hope to help teenagers learn about the risks associated with distracted driving.
While the videos are not readily available so far, Alaska Injury Prevention Center wants to launch the films this week.
