Fatal Pedestrian Accident On I-5 Reportedly Under Investigation

A pedestrian accident that took place on northbound I-5 resulted in the victim’s death, news outlets have reported.

The accident, which happened on Tuesday, is still under investigation. However, it was reported that at about 1:20 p.m., a 43-year-old truck driver traveling north on I-5 saw a woman run in front of the truck from the left shoulder just west of Sleater-Kinney Road Southeast. Unfortunately, the driver was unable to slow down or swerve to avoid hitting the pedestrian.

Following the pedestrian crash, traffic experienced a slowdown that lasted two hours and 30 minutes.

Officials reported that the victim died two days later at the hospital.

Most Pedestrian Accidents Are Avoidable

While this collision is still under investigation, it was reported that the driver was not able to avoid the crash. This is certainly not the case with many other pedestrian accidents being reported regularly across the country.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for crash-related injuries in 2017 whereas at least 5,977 were killed in the same period.

One of the most common factors present in the deadly pedestrian accidents analyzed by the CDC was impairment, with 47% of these accidents involving intoxicated drivers or passengers. Additionally, it is often the vulnerable, such as the elderly or children, who are injured in pedestrian accidents.

If drivers are serious about ensuring that they are not exposing anybody to risks, they must follow traffic rules and be particularly careful while driving at night.

Approaching crosswalks or intersections slowly and checking for pedestrians before carrying on is one of the ways drivers can avoid accidents. Pedestrians should also do their part by wearing reflective clothing at night, avoid using electronic devices and earbuds while crossing the street, and avoid going out while intoxicated.
