Engine Fires Behind Toyota’s Latest Recall

Toyota is recalling newer vehicles over engine issues that could lead to fires. Units impacted by the recall include the 2019 and 2020 RAV4 and RAV4 hybrid, and the 2020 Lexus ES300H vehicles, as well as the 2020 Camry, Camry hybrid, and Avalon hybrid. All vehicles come with Toyota’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines.

The firm reported that the engines in the recalled vehicles can develop cracks due to a manufacturing error. If cracks form and coolant or oil leaks, the engines can stall, overheat, or even catch fire.

Over 44,000 vehicles can present the problem, although Toyota said that it estimates only about 250 vehicles have defective engines.

Toyota Should Replace Engines In Recalled Vehicles

While Toyota’s recall covers a wide range of models, the firm said that only one small batch of engines present the problem. To identify dangerous vehicles, the firm will send a note in the mail to the owners of the over 44,000 vehicles in early April. Car owners should then schedule a visit to a dealer.

Once it’s been determined the engine is part of the affected batch, the dealer will replace the engine as well as the engine block for free.

Toyota identified this problem after learning that the water flow meter that regulates the engine’s casting failed in some vehicles. Because of this problem, some engines failed to cool completely.

If you own one of the recalled models and your vehicle was built between September and December 2019, you can contact Toyota to obtain more details on this recall.

We hope that Toyota is able to have all impacted vehicles fixed as soon as possible to avoid engine fires. Fire-related incidents can lead to injuries and property damage so we’re glad to see Toyota acting promptly on this issue.
