According to preliminary New York Police Department reports, 20 pedestrians died in auto collisions in the city in January of 2013, making it the deadliest month for NYC pedestrians in more than one year. The monthly average for fatal pedestrian accidents in the city last year was 11. Nearly 1,200 drivers were cited for failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians — the most dangerous offense as far as pedestrians are concerned, according to law enforcement officers — in January. Safety advocates predict that last year was a deadlier year than 2011 for pedestrians, but the official totals for 2012 will not be released by the states transportation department until later this year.
