Federal agents want to ensure that the number of kids who are between 12 and 18 years of age who try cigarettes for the first time goes down in the near future.
According to a release issued by the FDA, a campaign aimed at making sure that tobacco use among teens is not as frequent is being launched. The campaign now known as “The Real Cost” will deal with the consequences of smoking and will focus on teen smokers. The federal agency has announced that the campaign is a way of ensuring that the leading preventable cause of death, diseases and disabilities in the United States won’t affect as many lives as it now affects. The campaign will use all social media platforms and a series of other means to ensure that the right imagery combined with the facts will reach teens everywhere, from rural to urban America.
At least 10 million teens are expected to be reached by the educational efforts. According to the FDA, about 3,200 young Americans try cigarettes for the first time every day in the country while about 700 under the age of 18 turn into smokers daily. About 480,000 people die every year from diseases caused by their tobacco use.
The federal agency’s main goal with this campaign is to ensure that the next generation is tobacco free, but while the official campaign hasn’t been launched, safety experts urge teens and adults to keep in mind that the consequences to the user’s health should be taken into consideration when the teen or adult decides to try their first tobacco cigarette. They are also urging teens to remember that menthol cigarettes are just as dangerous as regular ones.
While some critics believe that only local city officials and other independent organizations will be able to reach out to the teens in the various regions of the country to encourage them to avoid trying tobacco, many are excited about this effort. The FDA’s goal is to reach to over 10 million teens across the country and use only facts and evocative imagery to make sure that teens’ attention is caught. By teaching important facts about the consequences of cigarette smoking to the young crowd could ensure that the younger generation goes into adulthood with a broad awareness of how certain health issues can be avoided if we simply say no.
