Bunk Beds Recalled Over Fall Hazard

American Woodcrafters and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued a recall for bunk bed products that pose a fall hazard, according to recent news sources.

The products subject to recall are the American Woodcrafters Wood Twin Bunk Beds and Loft Beds. About 180 total products were sold throughout the United States for about $600-$1,000. The products were sold from October 2010 through June 2011 from furniture dealers.

The safety issue is with the guard rails that are in place around the top bunk. They can crack, which causes the mattress and support rails to collapse, posing risks to both the occupant of the top bunk and the occupant of the bottom bunk. Two incidents have been reported, though no injuries have occurred.

The guard rails of twin-over-twin beds and twin-over-double bed loft designs need to be replaced. Consumers can locate the SKU number of products affected at the headboard or footboard. SKU number 1800-977 or 1800-969; PO number 103276, 103432, or 300038 are affected by this recall.

Consumers are advised to stop using the beds and contact American Woodcrafters to arrange for replacement guardrails.
