You know the “black boxes” that investigators always look for following a plane crash? You might not know that many cars have those too, according to the New York Times.

There are new regulations for those black boxes, known officially as data recorders, that go into effect next month. They will be required to capture certain data and meet accuracy and survivability standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also looking at creating a law that would make the black boxes mandatory for all vehicles.
