News outlets reported that two women sustained moderate injuries in a car accident on Interstate 82 near Benton City Monday morning.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the 75-year-old driver, a Walla Walla woman, was traveling east on Interstate 82 near Benton City at approximately 10:15am when she allegedly fell asleep while driving. While unconscious, her vehicle veered off the roadway. She apparently awoke and attempted to correct the vehicle’s path. She overcorrected, and forced the vehicle to roll over. She and her passenger were reported as wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, though they both suffered significant injuries.
The 75-year-old driver and her 75-year-old passenger, a Pendleton woman, were taken by ambulance to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland for the treatment of injuries they sustained during the crash. No update on their condition has been provided.
No other vehicles or injuries were involved in this accident. The Washington State Patrol is continuing their investigation into this accident. They have yet to state whether they believe drugs or alcohol to be contributing factors or whether any citations will be issued.
