Seattle Trasylol Injury Attorneys
A January 26, 2006 article in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that the medication Trasylol (generic: aprotinin) may double the risk of kidney failure in patients receiving it. Trasylol also increases the chances of heart attacks and heart failures by 55 percent.
If you or someone you love has recently had heart related surgery or a surgery that you believe involved the use of Trasylol, contact Bernard Law Group for a free consultation. Because the side effects of Trasylol are still being discovered it is important to seek thorough medical attention as well if you have had the drug administered.
The new study is especially troubling because most patients who undergo certain types of heart surgeries are given Trasylol. Trasylol works to prevent blood loss during surgical procedures and is mainly used in heart surgery operations. Shares of Trasylol maker Bayer have tumbled since the study was released.
Trasylol has been in wide use in as many as 60 countries since being approved by the United States Federal Drug Administration in 1993. The most recent study was done independently and run by Dr. Dennis T. Mangano. During the study some patients were given Trasylol and others were given generic alternatives. A control group received no medication at all.
The group that was administered Trasylol had an increased risk, from 1.3 percent to 2.8 percent, for heart attacks, kidney (renal) failure, strokes, and death. The study concluded that Trasylol should not be used at all since the generic alternatives posed no such risk.
The study, involving more than 4,300 heart surgery patients, showed data that was grossly inconsistent with previous Bayer Healthcare run studies. Bayer had over 15 years worth of data and trials which never displayed the increased risk of kidney and heart failure and heart attacks. Sales and administration of Trasylol have increased over the past two years after the company began marketing the drug for additional uses. Trasylol costs are high, running as much as $1,000 per dose, versus $10-15 for the generic alternatives.
