Recovering from an injury can be a slow, painful process. But did you know that there are some things you can do to help accelerate your healing? While you can’t wave a magic wand and make your injuries disappear, you can provide your body with the tools it needs to heal as quickly as possible.
7 Tips for Recovering from an Injury
While there are many things that you can do to help your body heal more rapidly, these seven tips are the major factors that can either interfere with or promote healing following an injury.
- Rest. Oftentimes, many accident victims try to push the healing process along and tend to be more active than they should. Resuming your pre-injury activities too soon can not only impair your healing process, it can worsen your injuries and set you back weeks or even months in the healing process. Extra rest during this time reduces the load on your body and your immune system and allows your body to divert more energy to the healing process.
- Fluids. Your body consists of 70% fluids. During the healing process, your body requires extra water to transport essential elements to injured areas and to rid the body of toxins and waste that are broken down during healing. Without adequate amounts of water, your body can only function on a limited basis, the healing process will be slowed, and your overall health will decline.
- Nutrition. During healing, the body often has an increased need for protein consumption. Protein is necessary for the repair of tissue and muscle. Consuming extra portions of meat or adding a protein additive to your diet may be recommended by your physician. In addition, your body may utilize extra amounts of vitamins and minerals. You should eat a balanced diet and take a multivitamin as directed by your physician.
- Exercise. While most normal forms of exercise are prohibited due to your injuries, it is still important to engage in light, allowable activities, such as walking, to increase blood flow and stimulate your body to heal. Short periods of light activity are best during this time.
- Stress. Your stress level can significantly impact your rate of healing. Reducing and relieving your stress as much as possible will help your immune system operate at optimal levels. You may also experience greater levels of energy and more restful sleep. You can reduce stress though enjoyable activities, relaxation techniques, and avoiding unnecessarily stressful situations.
- Pain. Managing your pain levels is a very important part of healing. While some people may be tempted to tough it out, your body has a predictable reaction to increased pain levels, and this reaction actually impedes the healing process. Take your pain medication on schedule and discuss your pain levels with your doctor regularly.
- Doctor’s Orders. Following the advice of your doctor is one of the best ways to help your body heal. Taking prescription medications according to your doctor’s directions, keeping your office and physical therapy appointments, limiting your activity, changing wound dressings regularly, and reporting any changes as soon as possible will help you and your doctor work as a team to get you back on track physically.
