Washington HRT Lawyers

Every year more and more medications are being recalled and warnings are being issued regarding the hazards of prescription drugs. Millions of women throughout the United States take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to help ease the symptoms and effects that are commonly associated with menopause, such as osteoporosis and hot flashes.

In July of 2002 the National Institute of Health released a report that stated that there are serious risks associated to long term use of hormone replacement therapy, including an increased risk of:

  • Invasive breast cancer
  • Heart attacks
  • Blood clots

Prempro is a widely used prescription hormone replacement manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, which is a combination of progestin and estrogen. Millions of women have been prescribed this medication over the past ten years, placing many of them at risk for dangerous side effects. There are a variety of other risks associated with the use of Prempro and other hormone replacement medications, which include:

  • Alzheimer’s
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Lupus
  • Gall bladder cancer
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Dementia
  • Severe depression
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

The likelihood and severity of the hormone replacement therapy side effects may differ depending upon the amount of estrogen in the medication, as well as the length of time the HRT was taken.

A lengthy study on Prempro conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative was testing the medications preventative qualities against osteoporosis, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer. The study was terminated early because it was discovered that the medication was very dangerous. Many studies conducted on HRT combinations of progestin and estrogen have had similar results, stating that the combination can be quite harmful to patients and increases their risks for serious medical conditions.

The manufacturers of dangerous prescription drugs must be held responsible for any injuries or fatalities which are caused by the use of their medications.
