Tech Promises to End Distracted Driving, Could it Deliver?

In a recent review for Consumer Reports, experts looked into the Cellcontrol Drive ID technology, an aftermarket system that helps drivers to steer away from distraction while behind the wheel. If the consumer watchdog organization is correct, the Cellcontrol Drive ID could be one of the most effective phone blocking technologies available in the market, giving drivers some relief from the dangers associated with distracted driving.

The technology, which uses Bluetooth technology, keeps drivers from using text functions while driving. The technology also blocks certain apps and systems, helping drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

The system works on most smartphones. And according to Consumer Reports, while the device used to block the phone can be recharged by a USB cable, the system is also solar powered.

During the Consumer Reports test, researchers claimed that the technology, which uses the device to connect to the driver’s phone via Bluetooth, is effective in blocking all apps, phone, and text functions as soon as the car starts moving. Since the system allows for a designated administrator to take care of the system’s settings, it could help drivers in a more significant way than by simply having a blocking app downloaded into your phone.

The anti-distracted driving technology could also be helpful for parents who are concerned about the safety of their teen children who are just now learning how to drive.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there has been a 336 percent increase in texting or typing while driving in the period between 2009 and 2014. With the rise in the use of apps that give drivers incentives to take “selfies” and with the proliferation of social media networks, drivers are often tempted to continue using their phones while behind the wheel even if they are aware of the potential dangers.

If you’re a driver and you’re serious about your safety, keep in mind that distracted driving is one of the most common factors behind auto crashes across the country.

If you’re a parent and your child is now learning about the dangers of the road, teach them about the importance of never splitting their attention between the road and their phone. It only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen.
