Nissan Unveils Moving Object Detection Technology

There is a huge amount of money and energy going into the development of car safety technology these days, particularly with everyone’s fear of sudden acceleration.  Not long ago, I mentioned Volvo’s pedestrian detection technology using radar sensors.  Other manufacturers are utilizing cameras, blind-spot detection, active braking assist and lane departure warnings.  The general trend among automakers is that the more high tech features they can pack into their vehicles the better.

According to this article, Nissan is also jumping on board with their own version of car safety technology.  They call it MOD, or Moving Object Detection.  It’s really designed to help drivers avoid bumping into people, cyclists, or other cars during low speed manuevers.  For instance, if you’re backing out of a parking stall and can’t see behind you and to the sides very-well, it will notify you if someone pushing a grocery cart is approaching.

Nissan utilizes a video display inside the car and an audible alert if any moving object approaches.  Just yesterday in local news, a 2 year-old toddler was tragically killed when she was backed over by a truck while playing in the driveway.  As a Seattle personal injury attorney, I hope such technology will help avoid such personal injury incidents in the future.  However, I also hope that it won’t replace the need for driver’s to remain alert and safe drivers themselves.
