Flying Pickax Blasts Through SUV Windshield

car accident attorneyA Kirkland couple narrowly escaped death on Sunday, May 23rd.   They were driving south on I-405 through Kirkland in their Mercedes-Benz SUV when the unsecured load of a pickup truck driving northbound on the freeway came loose.  A pickax from the truck bed then came hurling across the freeway traveling across multiple lanes of traffic.  It struck the Mercedes SUV on the hood of the car which caused it to flip up and shatter the windshield.

Luckily for the driver and passenger in the SUV, the axe came through the windshield directly between them, slightly brushing the driver’s shoulder before becoming lodged in the seat resting between them.  The couple pulled over the the I-1405 shoulder and called 911 immediately.

Had the pickax hit the vehicle any other way such as through the driver’s side window, or sideways on the windshield, there’s no doubt it would have caused serious injuries or even a fatality. Washington State Troopers are on the lookout for the pickup truck suspected of causing the accident.  The vehicle is described as a 1980′s or 1990′s green pickup truck with wood panels lining the bed of the pickup.

It’s undeniable how lucky the Kirkland couple is for narrowly escaping this accident unscathed.  Driver Peter Henning said, “I have no explanation.  And, I can’t say there was an angel looking over my shoulder because then how do I explain to my friend who had an accident two days ago and is over at Harborview that the angel was not looking over his shoulder.  I feel very lucky, very thankful.”

This incident serves as a reminder to properly secure your load.  Not doing so can lead to the injuries of an innocent victim and will result in a $5,000 fine with potential jail time.  You can read the entire article here.  On my Seattle personal injury lawyer blog, I recently published an article about the importance of securing your load that you can read here.
