After Several Injury Incidents, IKEA Recalls Safety Gates

All too often, companies launch recall campaigns as soon as they learn about a defect, but in many cases, incidents happen before campaigns are launched. In many of these cases, victims are injured. And in many others, victims lose their lives.

The latest recall to be launched with the help of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that certain safety gates and safety gate extensions sold and produced by IKEA are being recalled nationwide as well as in Canada after 55 incident reports were registered with the company.

Impacted products include all units of the IKEA PATRULL, PATRULL FAST and PATRULL KLÄMMA safety gates and safety gate extensions. These products come with locking mechanisms that could open up unexpectedly, increasing the risk of fall incidents that could impact children and consumers of other age groups.

Impacted units have been associated with 55 incidents that happened nationwide. In 10 of these incidents, injuries were reported. At least two of them were concussions, but victims also sustained bruises and cuts. At least four of these incidents happened in the United States and two resulted in cuts and bruises to children.

Consumers with the recalled products should check their safety gates and gate extensions for the impacted article numbers, which are listed on the CPSC website’s recall report.

Units listed under this recall were sold nationwide between August 1995 and June 2016. Consumers with the products in their possession are being urged to stop using the safety gate and extensions and have them returned to any IKEA store for a full refund.

Since this recall impacts products that have already exposed consumers to injuries, those with the recalled items should not ignore the risks.

Follow the recommendations put forth by the manufacturer and regulators to avoid accidents.
